Arthur Hancock first saw Fusaichi Pegasus not long after
his birth at Stone Farm, he called him ‘super man’.
Nothing that “FuPeg” has done since then has
discredited that assessment. As a yearling, he sold for
$4 million at the Keeneland July Sale. The following spring,
he was wearing a garland of roses in the winners circle
at the Kentucky Derby, the only son of the legendary stallion
Mr. Prospector to accomplish that feat. Because of his
female family (his dam is a sister to 1992 Preakness winner
Pine Bluff) and his race record, he became one of the most
sought after stallion prospects of all time. Ashford Stud
secured the services of Fusaichi Pegasus for a reported
$70 million and, based on the early returns, that investment
seems justified. His first crop are juveniles of 2004 and
he ranks among the top three first crop sires. He has already
sired four stakes winners including the multiple graded
winner Roman Ruler.
