Galloping Grocer, a homebred, burst on to
the New York racing scene late in the summer of 2004, winning
his first two starts by double digit margins. In his first
outing at Saratoga as a two year-old, he missed equaling
the track record by less than one fifth of a second, without
the slightest urging from his jockey! In his third start
he simply galloped in the Sleepy Hollow Stakes at Belmont
Park in October. But how would Galloping Grocer do in open
company? His first three starts were all against all New
York-breds.
Galloping Grocer answered that question in
the affirmative when he squared off against the unbeaten
Rockport Harbor in the
Remsen Stakes. Favored over his graded stakes-winning rival,
Galloping Grocer broke from the outside post and tracked
Rockport Harbor the whole trip before falling just a neck
shy at the wire. In defeat he earned the respect of the
racing world and he proved he could compete with any horse
in the country. Both Galloping Grocer and Rockport Harbor
posted a 102 Beyers speed rating for the 1 1/8 race (the
longest graded two year-old stake race).
Galloping Grocer made his three year-old debut
in the Whirlaway Stakes at Aqueduct in mid-February. In
that race, he suffered a minor leg injury and had to settle
for fourth. He is on the mend, though, and fininshed a troubled
second in the G3 Gotham in mid-March. He will go for his
first G1 win in the Wood Memorial on April 9.

Galloping Grocer hats will be donated to Belmont
