Horsehat.com Fast Fact: Dixieland Band,
the damsire of Limehouse, was the Leading Broodmare Sire
of 2004, ending Mr. Prospector's seven year reign in that
category.
It’s not unusual for a precocious two year-old that
has stakes success in late spring/early summer to have trouble
competing once the rest of their generation has time to
catch up. Limehouse is one of the special ones that has
won early, late and often.
The son of Grand Slam won his very first race, a four and
a half furlong affair on April 16, 2003 at Keeneland. He
would follow that effort with two more wins, both in stakes
events; the Three Chimneys Juvenile on Kentucky Derby Day
and the G3 Bashford Manor over the very good Cuvee. Later
in the year he would place in the G2 Saratoga Special and
the G2 Breeders’ Futurity.
Limehouse opened his three year season in the same fashion
he did his juvenile year. He won the G3 Hutcheson at Gulfstream
Park in impressive fashion over the stakes winners Deputy
Storm and Saratoga County and then shipped up to Tampa Bay
Downs and held off Mustanfar to win the G3 Tampa Bay Derby.
It was the kind of effort that makes it fun to be a fan
of these great thoroughbred athletes, as Limehouse battled
with Mustafar for a sixteenth of a mile but just would not
let him go by. He gave his all in his next start as well,
but had to settle for third in the G1 Blue Grass behind
The Cliff’s Edge and Lion Heart.
Limehouse again showed his toughness and consistency in
the recent Mr. Prospector H. at Gulstream Park. In his first
start in over six months, he ran a gallant second to Saratoga
County.
