Pollard’s Vision is lucky to be alive. Back in 2001 Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome ravaged Central Kentucky. The disease, ultimately linked to the Eastern Tent Caterpillar, caused thousands of foals to die in utero or to be still born. Etat’s Unis, Pollard’s Vision’s dam was affected but, fortunately, only her colt's right eye would suffer any damage.

That twist of fate was especially fortunate for owner David Moore, who races under the Edgewood Farm banner. Pollard’s Vision fit the physical criteria of his trainer Todd Pletcher and, likely because of the colts lack of full vision, Mr. Moore’s budget as well. He purchased the son of Carson City at the 2002 Keeneland September Sale for $70,000 and he and his wife named the colt for famed Seabiscuit jockey Red Pollard, who was also blind in his right eye.

Pollard’s Vision has been a treat not only for the Moore’s, but for horse racing fans everywhere. In 2004 he has won the Illinois Derby (G2) and the Leonard Richards (G3) at Delaware Park and the Lone Star Derby (G3) on Breeders’ Cup eve. When he is not winning he’s making his opposition run every step of the way as he has also placed in four other Derbies the year; the Ohio, the Pennsylvania, the West Virginia and the Louisiana. "We just think the horse has a huge heart," Moore told The Blood-Horse. "If you watch his tapes he comes back a second time, a third time, and a fourth time. I realize how incredibly lucky I am."
