Horsehats.com FastFact: Runway Model’s
earnings total of $580,598 ranked third among all juvenile
fillies of 2004, behind only G1 winners Sweet Catomine and
Balletto.
In 2004, Runway Model emerged as one of the very best fillies
of her generation. The young daughter of Petionville reeled
of a string of impressive performances beginning with a
nine-length Allowance romp on August 15. She then ran a
strong second in both the Bassinet at River Downs and the
G3 Arlington-Washington Lassie, where she finished second
to Culinary. At Keeneland in October, Runway Model unleashed
a powerful stretch run to take the important G2 Alicibiades.
Having just established herself as the best two year-old
filly in the Midwest, it was time to tackle the best from
the West (Sweet Catomine) and the East (Balletto) in the
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Again Runway Model
showed her best form, finishing third despite being blocked
repeatedly in the stretch.
To close out the 2004 season, Runway Model strut her stuff
in the G2 Golden Rod at Churchill Downs. She sauntered away
with that prize by an easy three lengths. In recognition
of her stellar campaign, Eclipse Award voters named her
a finalist for the 2004 Juvenile Filly Award.
Bernie Flint has his star filly back in training at Oaklawn
Park, where she is preparing for the 2005 Kentucky Oaks.
She will likely return to competition in the G2 Fair Grounds
Oaks in mid-March.
