Even after only one race, Sharp Lisa looked like
a special filly. Her win in a maiden race at Calder
last September attracted attention from many of the
top outfits in the country. Luckily for J. Paul Reddam,
his partners and his trainer Doug O’Neill, he
was the highest bidder.
“My brother found her and then we had to have
her after we found out she was for sale,” said
trainer Doug O’Neill. “I saw the video
of her maiden win at Calder and she was just so impressive.
It’s so rare a first time starter wins with
the ease that she did. From that we could tell she
was special.”
In her second lifetime start and first start for
her new connections she was narrowly beaten in the
G2 Alcibiades. She would close out her juvenile campaign
by running second to the talented Splendid Blended
in the G1 Hollywood Starlet.
In 2005 Sharp Lisa has really shone. She took the
G2 Santa Ynez by and easy length and half for her
first stakes win. Then she stepped back onto the grade
one stage and won the Las Virgenes after a stretch-long
duel with Memorette.
Sharp Lisa was bred in Kentucky by WinStar Farm and
was initially purchased for a bargain price of $50,000
at the 2003 Keeneland September Sale.
