Del
Mar racetrack opened in July of 1937. Bing Crosby and several
of his Hollywood friends were initial investors in the track, in
fact, on opening day in 1937 Crosby collected tickets at the main
gate. The first photo-finish camera was used at Del Mar. Del
Mar's average daily purses are  among the highest of any racetrack
in the country, which means the best horses will always show up. The
track at Del Mar is a on-mile oval with 7 furlong and 1 1/4 mile
chutes. The distance from the last turn to the finish is
919 feet. The turf course is called the "Jimmy Durante Turf
Course" and is a 7 furlong oval with a 1/8 mile diagonal chute. Seating
capacity at Del Mar is 14,304. |
