Miniature Horses
Miniature
Horses are found all over the world and come in various colors and
coat patterns. The miniature horse is a “height” breed.
There are two registries for the Miniature Horses, AMHA ( American
Miniature Horse Association) and the AMHR (American Miniature Horse
Registry). They can not exceed 34" at the last hair of the mane
in AMHA. There are two divisions in AMHR - "A" 34" and
under and "B" 34"-38". Due to their size and stature,
miniatures are completely separated from the rest of the horse show
world. They compete in their own horse shows which include categories:
Halter, in hand hunter, jumper and obstacle; driving, liberty, and
obstacle or "trail" classes. They can be shown to the World
level just an any other breed. Miniature horses can also kept as domestic
pets. The average life span of miniature horses is 30 years. The oldest
living horse on record was a dwarf named Angel who lived with the
Horse Protection Society of North Carolina, who lived to be over 50.

Horse Breeds
Dartmoor Pony - Dartmoor National Park in southwestern England is
home to thousands of miniature ponies who ream freely across a vast
moor. The Dartmoor ponies height requirements fall within the height
requirements of several USA miniature horse breeds.
Falabella
- According to Toyhorse International, the Falabella breed is an Argentinean
breed that descend from one stallion with a 'dwarf' gene. He was
discovered in the 19th Century by an Irishman named Newton when he
settled in Argentina.
Midget Pony - This
breed was popularized in the 1960s by the McCoy stud, owned by Smith
McCoy of Roderfield, West Virginia, and was created by selective
breeding, using Shetland Pony stock. McCoy midget ponies were the
foundation stock for many of the USA miniature horses.
American Miniature Horse - Some miniature
horse breeders in the USA bred extensively with dwarf horses such
as the famous Bond Tiny Tim, an AMHA registered dwarf stallion that
was bred extensively and sired many AMHA champions.
